Purpose of Role:

The Grade 4 and 5 Teacher is responsible for the holistic development and academic progress of learners aged 9 to 11 years. This role focuses on bridging the gap between the Foundation Phase and the more complex demands of the Intermediate Phase through intentional teaching and a supportive classroom environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Holistic Education: Assume all educational responsibilities for your classes, ensuring learners meet the developmental and academic milestones required for the Intermediate Phase.
  • Trust & Security: Promote a safe, professional, and engaging environment where learners feel empowered to solve complex problems and lead their own learning.
  • Curriculum Integration: Use a learner-centered approach to plan activities that stimulate advanced literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking skills.
  • Parent Partnership: Communicate regularly and honestly with parents regarding academic progress, social development, and overall well-being.
  • Collaborative Teamwork: Work positively with the Intermediate Phase team to plan age-appropriate activities and maintain high school-wide standards.
  • Professional Growth: Participate in regular development sessions and reflect on your teaching practice to lead your personal growth strategy.
  • Safety: Ensure the classroom remains a safe, organized, and productive zone tailored to the needs of active pre-teens.
  • Physical Requirement Note: This is an active role requiring the ability to move through the classroom, lead outdoor activities, and engage in school sports.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: Relevant Bachelor of Education (Intermediate Phase) or equivalent qualification.
  • SACE: Valid registration with the South African Council for Educators (SACE).
  • First Aid: Current First Aid certification is a significant advantage.
  • Security: Clear criminal record and clearance against the National Register for Sex Offenders.
  • Experience: 2–4 years of experience teaching children in the Grade 4–6 bracket.
  • Skills: Proven understanding of Intermediate Phase assessments and adolescent developmental milestones.
